It is common knowledge that the Monarch Butterfly relies on milkweed as the critical larval food plant that ensures future generations. However, Michigan's swallowtails - four equally large and beautiful butterfly species, but much less acknowledged - each also rely on their own specific larval food plants to reproduce. With the use of beautiful Powerpoint images and live specimens Jim McGrath of Nature Discovery will discuss the life cycles of Black, Spicebush, Tiger and Giant Swallowtails, including how to find their ornately-colored and patterned caterpillars in the wild, how to rear them safely to adult form, and what to provide in your yard to sustain adult swallowtails and caterpillars, alike. Discussion will include several other Michigan-native lepidopterans, their larvae and food plants, as well.
